Keeping up

A realistic house cleaning schedule for busy families

What to do every day, week, month and season, and what to hand off when there aren't enough hours in the week.

Clean kitchen with granite counters and wood cabinets

The short version: you don't need a spotless house every day. You need a few small daily habits, one weekly reset, and a plan for the jobs that only come around a few times a year.

Every day: 10 to 15 minutes

These are the jobs that stop a busy week from snowballing. Split them up so no one person is doing all of them.

After meals

  • Dishes done or loaded
  • Counters and stovetop wiped
  • Crumbs swept from under the table

Before bed

  • A five-minute pickup of the main rooms
  • Bathroom sink and counter wiped
  • Shoes, bags and backpacks back by the door

Every week: the reset

This is the bigger clean that makes the house feel like yours again. Most families pick one day, or split it across two evenings.

  • Kitchen: wipe the appliance fronts and the inside of the microwave, scrub the sink, and mop the floor.
  • Bathrooms: scrub the tub, shower and toilet, clean the mirrors, and mop.
  • Everywhere: dust reachable surfaces, vacuum carpets and mop hard floors.
  • Bedrooms: change the sheets and empty the trash.

Every month: the in-between jobs

  • Wipe baseboards, light switches and door handles
  • Clean out the fridge and wipe the shelves
  • Dust ceiling fans, air vents and blinds
  • Clean the dishwasher filter
  • Wipe window sills and vacuum the tracks

Every season, Valley style

Living in the Central Valley and the foothills brings its own list.

  • Spring: pollen season. Wash the windows and wipe the sills, and change the HVAC filter before the heat arrives.
  • Summer: the air conditioner runs nonstop and dust builds up fast. Dust vents and fan blades more often and check the filter monthly.
  • Fall: in farm country, harvest season can mean extra dust on every surface. It's a good time for a top-to-bottom deep clean before the holidays.
  • Winter: rain and fog mean muddy shoes. Put a good mat at each door and mop entryways more often.

Give everyone a job

Even young kids can take part. Little ones can put toys in bins and match socks. School-age kids can set the table, empty small trash cans and wipe the bathroom sink. Teens can take on vacuuming, their own laundry, or a full bathroom. A simple chore chart on the fridge settles the arguments before they start.

What to hand off

If the weekly reset is the part that never happens, that's the part to hand off. A recurring cleaning service takes care of the kitchen, bathrooms, dusting and floors, and your family keeps up the daily habits in between.

Every other week suits most households. Weekly makes sense with kids, pets or a full house. Monthly works for smaller or tidier homes. If the house has gotten behind, start with a deep clean so the regular visits have a clean baseline to maintain.

We clean for families in Madera, Tesoro Viejo, Fresno and Clovis, and up into the foothills.
